1 Nephi 1:1

"I, Nephi, having been born of goodly parents, therefore I was taught somewhat in all the learning of my father; and having seen many afflictions in the course of my days, nevetheless, having been highly favored of the Lord in all my days; yea, having had a great knowledge of the goodness and the mysteries of God, therefore I make a record of my proceedings in my days."

A good name is better than the riches of the world, and love is greater than silver and gold. For Nephi to show such great respect for his parents is worth more than the worldly possessions one can have.

Parents have a responsibility to teach their children. Parents teach their children about the Lord and nurture their children to be the best they can be. It is a gift that they can share with their children.

Afflictions give us strength and learning so we can find blessings in all the trials and struggles in our lives. At the time of a trial we often can't see the good that is coming out of it, only after the trial do we see how we have changed, either for the better or for the worst. It is during the trial that we make the decision whether we want to change and become a better person or take into heart the frustrations and disappointments.

Being favored of the Lord means that Nephi had followed the commandments of the Lord and done the best he could with following the Lord. By doing this he opened pathways to understanding and blessings from the Lord that can only come through obedience to the commandments. This is also available to all that seek diligently for it.

We can gain knowledge by many ways; Prayer; scripture study, and going to church are the most spoken of. From these others stem from and the mysteries of God can and will be revealed to those who are ready to receive it.

Records are kept for the generations to come, sharing the joy of the words of God and having the spiritual experiences of the people before to give strength to the men of now. Each prophet gave insight to the ways of the Lord and knowledge of the truth. Bit-by-bit more has been revealed or more often said, "line upon line, precept upon precept," will truth be made clear to those who diligently seek it.
